Inspired by Dilla, Motown, Audrey Hepburn and classic 50’s Hollywood, Khan Solo’s latest beat tape is a gorgeous, rich and emotional listening experience. I’ve been playing this on repeat all weekend. His use of samples is occasionally breathtaking: “You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down” from It’s a Wonderful Life in Track 3 for instance.
And half the fun of plunderphonics is identifying those familiar samples as they whizz past. Is that drum sample in Track 1 from LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Dance Yrself Clean’? Is that Audrey Hepburn? Which Bollywood sample is that in Track 12? But beat tapes like this also can be incredibly emotional, like it says in Track 1, by using other people’s poetry to tell your own story. I really think this story is told beautifully.
Current favourite: Track 3
You can buy ‘Stargirl: A Sample Based Love Story’ here.
You can listen to it on SoundCloud above, but some tracks aren’t available in Pakistan for some reason. Also, no idea if Omar Khan is Pakistani, but idgaf because I love this so much.
